Blog #3: Little Cog-Burt & Cotton Candy


Phyllis Allfrey and Dora Alonso writes novel, short stories, and scripts for the radio. The authors focus on their stories for people to understand on how the reality hits others in the world. Phyllis Allfrey writes for the newspaper at the star, while Dora Alonso writes scripts for the radio and television. Phyllis Allfrey and Dora Alonso are similar in writing novels and short stories is their passion for writing it.  “Little Cog-Burt” is about a woman not wanting to throw a Christmas party for her workers children. Every year the woman husband cuts few inches of her hair, so she can make a Christmas fairy. It was obvious that the lady didn’t want to throw the party, but she did it any way for her husband. While the party was in process it felt very awkward, because the children didn’t feel comfortable around the lady. “Cotton Candy” is about a girl name Lola who has a lot of fantasy about boys. Lola had collected butterflies to represent her love for each boy that she had loved in her younger years. Lola is a virgin, because her mother wouldn’t let her have a boyfriend or to get married. “Cotton Candy” and “Little Cog-Burt” are totally different stories, written by different authors, different scenarios of the situation that the story is telling. “Little Cog-Burt” is originally from Dominica and “Cotton Candy” is from Cuba, in a since both stories are from the Caribbean. Phyllis Allfrey wrote “Little Cog-Burt” to show how stubborn the main character is when it came to setting up a Christmas party for her workers children. It had seem that the lady had a problem with throwing a party for hard working people children, Phyllis Allfrey intentions to show readers that there are people who is going to have problems with others. Also Phyllis Allfrey wanted to show readers that people will come around to get to know others. Dora Alonso intentions on “Cotton Candy” to show readers that there are people in the world who are trap by something. Dora Alonso writes on an important subject to her work is the Cuban farmer showing his human values and love for nature. Phyllis Allfrey important subject is on children learning on important information about the Caribbean history.
